The challenge: managing the cost of running a pool

Paul’s family were facing the common challenge of trying to keep their bills down. With a pool pump running daily and various appliances in use, their energy consumption was substantial. By simply switching their pool pump to run during the day and using other appliances when wholesale electricity prices were lower, they were able to reduce their electricity rate. Paul’s wife, working from home, could easily manage this shift, making it a seamless transition.

In their best month, Paul’s family achieved an impressive PEA of -7.9 c/kWh, reducing their Flow Home electricity rate to 24.7 c/kWh. On average, they have managed to reduce their base rate by 6.1 c/kWh each month, equating to an average monthly reduction of $60!

Having someone at home most of the time has been crucial to their success. Paul’s wife works from home two days a week and is much more mindful of when they use appliances that consume more electricity. The Flow Power app has also been a game-changer, providing real-time energy forecasts and alerts.

“It’s just great to get a gauge of what’s happening. Occasionally we’ve been alerted to a spike, which was helpful. [The app] is useful. Like a fire hazard spectrum: green, go for it, and red, let’s hold off.”
