STAY IN CONTROL when prices rise

The price of electricity changes every five minutes on the wholesale market, and can affect your electricity bill when it rises.

That’s where our price notifications come in.

Get prepared for high price spikes

We’ll let you know when electricity prices soar, so you can make the right choices for you and your bill.

You’ll receive a priority price notification whenever the wholesale price is forecast to rise above $10/kWh. This might happen during extreme weather events or unexpected outages – but rest assured, it doesn’t happen very often.

You can also choose to enable custom price notifications, which will alert you every five minutes when electricity prices rise above your comfort level.

You can choose to get notified when the price rises above 50c/kWh, $1/kWh or $5/kWh.

Opting in is easy

You can enable price notifications via the Flow Power app.

Simply enter the settings section by pressing on the person icon and choose to turn custom price notifications on.

You can choose to get price notifications by SMS, push notification*, or both.

* If you choose to get notified via push alerts, you’ll need to allow notifications from the Flow Power app in order to receive price notifications.

A word to the wise

While we’ll always do our best to keep you on top of price spikes it’s important to know there may be times where we won’t be able to provide advance notice.

This may happen when the relevant market event was not forecast or there wasn’t enough time for us to alert you of the price rise. Flow Power is not liable for differences between the forecast event pricing published by AEMO and the actual market price.

Other factors may impact our ability to notify you, or your ability to receive our notices, such as (but not limited to) the untimely publication of relevant forecast data or the availability of third-party communications networks.

More questions about price notifications

Do I need to power down when I receive a price notification?

While it’s not mandatory, reducing your energy use during high price events will have a positive impact on your Price Efficiency Adjustment (PEA) and bill.

However, you should always consider health and safety before following our suggestions or advice.

Which custom price notification should I pick?

If you want to stay on top of your bills but don’t have much room to change your energy approach, we’d recommend enabling the 50c/kWh custom price notification. This price rise happens occasionally but reflects a good time to power down (if you can).

If you’re keen to keep your electricity costs low and are very flexible with your energy use, try enabling the $1/kWh custom price notification.

This price rise doesn’t happen often but represents a very good time to power down. When you receive this alert, you could try powering down small non-essentials like entertainment units, washing machines or dishwashers.

If you have major appliances you can be flexible with, we’d recommend enabling the $5/kWh custom price notification. This price rise rarely happens but represents an extremely good time to power down.

If it’s safe to do, we’d suggest switching off major appliances like heating or cooling systems, or pool pumps when you receive this alert.
