Battery incentives and rebates in your state: A 2025 guide

Discover 2025 solar battery rebates across Australia. See state incentives, savings examples, and tips to qualify and apply.

25 September 2025, 4 mins

Solar batteries are no longer a niche technology, they’re becoming a mainstream name across households. In 2025, households across Australia can take advantage of generous rebates and incentives that bring down the cost of installing a home battery. With federal discounts stacking alongside state-based schemes, the potential savings are significant.

This guide breaks down what’s on offer, where you live, and how to qualify. For more details on how energy pricing works with solar and batteries, check out how our pricing works.

Federal incentive: Cheaper Home Batteries Program

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program is a nationwide rebate available from 1 July 2025. It provides an upfront discount of around 30% on eligible batteries between 5kWh and 100kWh. For a typical 10–13kWh battery, this could mean savings of $3,000–$4,000 annually.

To qualify:

  • The battery must be on the Clean Energy Council’s approved list.
  • Installation must be carried out by an accredited installer.
  • The first 50kWh of usable capacity is eligible.

State / Territory  Incentives available  Eligibility notes
NSW  Up to $1,500 bonus for connecting your battery to a Virtual Power Plant (VPP).  Must install a VPP-ready battery.

VIC  Solar Victoria loans + rebates in addition to federal schemes.  Must meet Solar Victoria criteria.

QLD  Federal rebate only.  Local council/retailer offers may apply.

SA  Federal rebate baseline; some VPP trials.  Must use an accredited installer.

WA  Residential Battery Scheme available.  Conditions vary by provider.

TAS  Federal rebate baseline; some grant options.  Check local energy efficiency programs.

NT  Federal rebate baseline.  High battery adoption rates already.

ACT  Sustainable Household loans available.  Stacks with federal scheme.

Battery uptake trends

72,500 batteries were installed in 2024 – the highest year on record.

In August 2025 alone, households added 423MWh of storage capacity, more than half of the total installed in all of 2024.

Uptake varies by state: the Northern Territory leads with over 80% attachment rates, followed by the ACT and South Australia at around 15%, Victoria and Tasmania at 8%, and Queensland and Western Australia at 4%.

How to apply

Applying for rebates is straightforward, with most accredited installers managing the process on your behalf.

  1. Check eligibility for both federal and state incentives.
  2. Choose an accredited installer and confirm your battery is approved.
  3. Confirm rebate handling – usually applied upfront as a discount.
  4. Consider a VPP if available in your state for added financial benefits.
Tip: Rebates will gradually step down over time, so applying early ensures maximum savings.

With the federal rebate covering around 30% of battery costs and additional state incentives on offer, 2025 is the ideal time to invest in solar battery storage. Installing a battery not only lowers upfront costs but also gives households greater control over their energy use.
