High price events explained: how June’s market surges affected your bill

As a Flow Power customer on a wholesale-linked plan, when wholesale prices go up during a high price event, so does your usage cost (and the reverse is true when prices are low).

30 July 2025, 4 mins

In June 2025, two major high-price events occurred in the energy market. A mix of unexpected coal generator outages, cold winter weather, and low wind generation led to a supply shortfall. To keep the grid stable, more expensive gas generators had to step in as backup – but they’re much more expensive to run. As a result, wholesale electricity prices surged for several hours on those days.

What this meant for Flow Home customers

Flow Home is a dynamic priced plan, which means the price you pay is tied to real-time electricity market conditions. When wholesale prices go up during a high price event, so does your usage cost (and the reverse is true when prices are low).

Here’s what we saw:

  • Some customers who responded to our high price event notifications and reduced their usage saw significant savings on their bills.
  • Those who continued using energy as usual or increased their usage during the high price events saw their June bills come in higher than expected.

What to do during a high price event

How high price notifications can help you save

If you’re a Flow Home customer, you may have recently received high price notification SMS alerts. We understand these can be unexpected especially if you’re new to a dynamic priced plan. But they’re designed to help you take control and save on your electricity bill.

Here’s how high price notifications work:
  • When a high price event is forecast, we send you a free SMS alert to let you know.
  • This is your heads-up that electricity will be significantly more expensive for a few hours, and your chance to shift or reduce your usage if you can.

Even small actions, like turning off the dryer or delaying the dishwasher, can make a noticeable difference to your monthly bill.

Real savings from real customers

Laura received a high price notification and chose to go to the gym and order takeaway during the high price event rather than use electricity at home. By avoiding energy use during the spike, Laura’s bill was lower that month, and this covered the cost of her dinner!

Elizabeth and Riley, a couple working in the CBD, did not act on their first high price notification and incurred a charge for that day. The next time, they decided to go out for dinner during the high price event and returned home after it ended. This time, they saved, demonstrating the impact of shifting their energy use.

Is Flow Home right for you?

We understand that not everyone can adjust their energy use. If you have kids, housemates, or a schedule that makes it difficult to shift your energy use, dynamic pricing may not be the best fit. It’s important to consider whether Flow Home aligns with your needs.

Start taking control

While high price events can be a challenge, they’re also an opportunity to take control of your bill.

Whether it’s turning off the dryer, heading out for dinner, or delaying the dishwasher, small changes during these events can lead to big savings.
