Earn up to a 35c per kWh evening feed-in tariff

Export stored power from your battery between 5:30 and 9:30pm and earn a premium on the first 15kWh you send back, every day.

State First 15kWh exported from 5:30–9:30 pm After 15kWh (5:30-9:30pm) All other times
Victoria 30c/kWh 10c/kWh 0c/kWh
NSW, SA and QLD 35c/kWh 10c/kWh 0c/kWh

Built for battery owners

Happy Hour rewards the thing your battery already does: storing cheap or solar energy and sending it back when the grid needs it most. The bigger your battery, the more electricity you can send to the grid in the window.

  • Keep control of your battery
  • Export on your terms
  • Store solar, sell it in the evening
  • Bigger battery, more to export

What you pay for power

Wholesale electricity quietly costs more at some times of day than others. Through the middle of the day, when rooftop solar right across the state is flooding the grid, wholesale power is usually cheap. In the early evening, when everyone’s home and the sun’s gone, it’s at its most expensive.

Your Happy Hour plan allows you to make the most of that pattern. You start each month with a base rate for your power, and it nudges up or down depending on when you use it, we call this the Price Efficiency Adjustment. Use more of your power on a cheaper daytime and your rate can come down; lean on it during a pricey evening peak and it can go up. So the more you can run the big stuff (charging your battery, hot water, the washing, the pool pump, the EV) when wholesale prices are cheap (typically through the middle of the day), the better your rate works out.

Battery owners do especially well here, because the battery can quietly cover your evening use, exactly when power costs the most.

You stay in control. It is not a VPP.

You decide when your battery charges and discharges, we never export on your behalf. The idea is simple: charge and use power when it’s cheaper through the day, then hold stored power to export during the 5:30–9:30pm window, when the premium rate applies.

We have guides and factsheets on how to set your battery up for Happy Hour.

FAQs

What feed-in tariff applies in my state?

For Victorian customers the first 15kWh you export during Happy Hour earns the boosted feed-in tariff of 30c/kWh. Any additional energy exported during the same Happy Hour period is paid at 10c/kWh.

For NSW, SA and QLD customers the first 15kWh you export during Happy Hour earns the boosted feed-in tariff of 35c/kWh. Any additional energy exported during the same Happy Hour period is paid at 10c/kWh.

Why do export rates vary by state?

Electricity markets and network conditions differ across Australia, which means export rates can vary depending on your location.

What is the feed-in tariff outside Happy Hour?

Outside the Happy Hour export window, your feed‑in tariff is 0c/kWh.

That’s because during the middle of the day the grid is often flooded with solar and wholesale electricity prices are lower, so your exports aren’t worth much to the system.

How are my exports measured?

We use data from your smart meter, which records how much electricity you export to the grid in 5‑minute intervals.

Each export interval is tagged with the exact time it occurred, so we can clearly identify exports that happen during Happy Hour from exports that happen at other times of day.

Your bill then applies the Happy Hour export rate to the energy you exported during that window, and the standard export rate (currently 0c/kWh) to exports outside that window.

Does Flow Power control my battery?

Happy Hour is not a VPP (Virtual Power Plant), which means that you will be the one calling the shots, and will be in full control of managing your battery settings and exports.

We simply provide the export window; you will need to schedule the exports in your battery app.

Here are some guides on how you can do that.

Where do I manage my exports?

You can manage your exports using your battery or solar app. At this stage you cannot manage exports directly using the Flow Power app. You can only view your energy usage and export patterns via the Flow Power app.

How do I receive my export credit?

Eligible feed-in tariff credits are applied to your Flow Power account. If your account has an eligible credit balance, you can request a refund through the Flow Power app in the ‘more’ section.

Any feed-in credit automatically rolls over from month to month and will be applied as a credit to your next monthly bill.

Please note it may take up to 21 days for the credit refund to be processed.

If you cancel your Flow Power contract, any Happy Hour credit will be paid out to you.

Where can I see my energy usage and export patterns?

You can see all of this in the Flow Power app:

  • A live or near realtime view of your household usage when live data is available (typically updating every few seconds via smart meter or Flow Hub).
  • A “Today” view showing how your usage and exports have tracked so far.
  • Historical views of your last 30 days (and beyond) in 5minute intervals, including how much you exported and when.
  • An energy forecast for the week ahead, highlighting cheaper and more expensive times so you can plan usage and exports.
  • A price efficiency dial that shows whether your current behaviour is likely to improve or worsen your monthly Price Efficiency Adjustment. This makes it easy to see how your habits line up with cheaper and more expensive times, and how much of your solar you’re using or exporting.
What is the Price Efficiency Adjustment?

The Price Efficiency Adjustment (PEA) reflects when you use electricity during the billing period.

Using more electricity during lower-price periods may reduce your rate, while using more during higher-price periods may increase it.
