How much do you pay for power?

Flow Power uses variable rates, not peak and off peak rates. Here’s how variable pricing works:

  • You get a base rate per kWh
  • Your base rate will be adjusted each month to reflect if you used power when it was cheap or expensive
  • Using power when it is cheap (typically in the middle of the day) will decrease your rate for the whole month
  • Using power when it is expensive (typically in the evening) would increase your rate
  • To get the best savings, we recommend moving energy loads (like washing machines, dishwashers and EV chargers) to the middle of the day and using your battery or minimising usage in the evenings.

How it works

During the day

Solar is flooding the grid thanks to Australia’s growing rooftop solar capacity, and wholesale prices can be very low or even negative.

During daytime hours, the grid typically doesn’t need more power – in fact solar power exported during this time can actually lead to strain on our shared electricity system. That’s why Flow Power’s feed in tariff rate outside 5:30-9:30pm is $0 per kWh.

In the evening

Demand and prices typically rise at this time, making power exported from your solar or battery system more valuable. This is because household power usage usually increases when people arrive home after work.

Setting your battery to discharge between 5:30-9:30pm local time and you’ll benefit from our feed-in rate of additional 5c/kWh on the first 15kWh to reward you for making smart energy choices.

Throughout the month

Flow Power customers receive more than just bonus rates for smart-timed exports.

The more you avoid using electricity from the grid during morning and evening peak periods, the better your monthly Price Efficiency Adjustment will be, bringing down your overall electricity rate for the month.

This gives energy-savvy exporters additional potential to supercharge their savings.

Receiving your credit

Any feed-in credit automatically rolls over from month to month and will be applied as a discount to your next monthly bill.

You can request credit to be paid out in the Flow Power app in the ‘profile’ section, or by contacting customer service via email or live chat (available Monday – Friday, 9-5pm). We will require your bank details for the refund to be processed.

If you cancel your Flow Power contract, any credit will be paid out to you.

Your battery, in your hands

Flow Power does not control the customer’s battery.

Instead, customers get:

  • Live usage data through the Flow Power app
  • You get to fully control your battery system
  • Wholesale price forecasts to guide charging and discharging
  • Flexibility to optimise their battery their own way
  • Flow Power plans work with all battery brands and system setups

FAQs

How are my exports measured?

We use data from your smart meter, which records how much electricity you export to the grid in 5‑minute intervals.

Each export interval is tagged with the exact time it occurred, so we can clearly identify exports that happen during Happy Hour from exports that happen at other times of day.

Your bill then applies the Happy Hour export rate to the energy you exported during that window, and the standard export rate (currently $0c/kWh to exports outside that window.)

Please note, all new customers in NSW, SA and QLD will require a smart meter upgrade. This is completed at no additional cost to you – you can learn more about the smart meter upgrade process here.

Do I control my own exports?

Yes. You keep full control of your solar and battery system at all times.

Flow Home doesn’t remotely control your inverter or battery. Instead, we give you price signals and a clear Happy Hour window, and you decide how to respond.

If you have a battery or smart inverter, you (or your installer) can set it up so you charge when energy is cheaper and export more during Happy Hour, but all those settings remain in your hands.

Where do I manage my exports?

You can manage your exports using your battery or solar app. At this stage you cannot manage exports directly using the Flow Power app. You can only view your energy usage and export patterns via the Flow Power app.

Is there a lock-in contract?

No. Flow Home is a month‑to‑month electricity plan with no lock‑in contract and no exit fees.

If you decide Flow Home isn’t right for you, you can switch to another retailer at any time.

We do run a standard credit check when you sign up, but if you change your mind early on you also have a 10‑day cooling‑off period as required under energy regulations.

What is the feed-in tariff for the rest of the day?

Outside the Happy Hour export window, your feed‑in tariff is currently $0/kWh.

That’s because during the middle of the day the grid is often flooded with solar and wholesale prices are low, so your exports aren’t worth much to the system.

By contrast, during Happy Hour, you receive a higher export rate of 40c/kWh, because that’s when your energy is more valuable.

Which states are eligible for this feed-in rate?

For Happy Hour, If you’re in New South Wales, South Australia or South East Queensland, you’ll earn:

  • 40c/kWh on the first 15 kWh you export during Happy Hour (5:30pm – 9:30pm)
  • 10c/kWh on any additional energy you export during the same Happy Hour period
Where can I see my energy usage and export patterns?

You can see the following in the Flow Home app:

  • A live or near real‑time view of your household usage when live data is available (typically updating every few seconds via smart meter or Flow Hub).
  • A “Today” view showing how your usage and exports have tracked so far.
  • Historical views of your last 30 days (and beyond) in 5‑minute intervals, including how much you exported and when.
  • An energy forecast for the week ahead, highlighting cheaper and more expensive times so you can plan usage and exports.
  • A price efficiency dial that shows whether your current behaviour is likely to improve or worsen your monthly Price Efficiency Adjustment. This makes it easy to see how your habits line up with cheaper and more expensive times, and how much of your solar you’re using or exporting.
How do I receive the feed-in credit?

Any feed-in credit automatically rolls over from month to month and will be applied as a discount to your next monthly bill.

You can request credit to be paid out in the Flow Power app in the ‘profile’ section, or by contacting customer service via email or live chat (available Monday – Friday, 9-5pm). We will require your bank details for the refund to be processed.

If you cancel your Flow Power contract, any credit will be paid out to you.

Is Flow Home a VPP?

No. Flow Home is not a Virtual Power Plant (VPP).

With Flow Home, customers keep full control of their battery systems. Flow Power does not control how your battery operates or when your energy is exported. Your system runs independently, so you decide how your stored energy is used.

How do my 4Free hours work?

Get up to 8kWh of electricity usage credited in each hour between 11am and 3pm local time, up to 32 kWh across the four-hour period. Each hour has its own 8kWh allowance and unused electricity does not carry into another hour.

Your electricity use is calculated under your plan using your base rate, including any applicable Price Efficiency Adjustment. We then apply a separate 4Free credit that offsets the effective energy usage cost of your eligible electricity used during the 4Free Period.

What is the Price Efficiency Adjustment?

The Price Efficiency Adjustment (PEA) reflects when you use electricity during the billing period.

Using more electricity during lower-price periods may reduce your rate, while using more during higher-price periods may increase it.
