Tom and Joy’s place is about as future-ready as they come: an 8.4kW solar array, a 40kWh Sigenergy battery paired with a 25kW inverter, three-phase power, heat-pump hot water and two EVs that need charging at any time. There’s no gas as the home runs entirely on electricity. They had it all installed through Solar Choice and Infinite Solar.
With a battery that size and an inverter to match, the couple weren’t chasing a simple “cheap rate.” They wanted to put stored energy to work, which meant finding a retailer whose plan rewarded exporting at the right time.

As Joy explains, “On a couple of days you might make a hundred bucks in a couple of hours.”

The couple are quick to point out those numbers didn’t happen by accident, it’s the timing of when they charge and export the battery that makes the plan sing, and Solar Choice helped them dial it in.
Because their solar array is on the smaller side for a 40kWh battery, they top the battery up from the grid in the cheapest part of the day, Solar Choice helped them settle on a 12:30–2:30pm window and then export it during the evening Happy Hour. They also tightened up how much they exported outside the paid window, cutting wasted export from 241kWh in an early bill down to just 27.9kWh.
For Tom and Joy, one of the biggest changes wasn’t on the bill. It was how little they had to think about their electricity.
“We haven’t been app-gazing at all over the last three months. It’s been quite nice. Just set and forget, and then the bill comes in and you make sure it’s all good.”
For a household with a big battery, solar and plenty of electricity use, Happy Hour gave them a simpler way to put their stored energy to work.
