What does Labor winning the federal election mean for batteries?

With Labor's 2025 federal election win, the much-anticipated Cheaper Home Batteries Program is set to become a reality, marking a significant shift in Australia's approach to renewable energy and household energy management.

With Labor’s win in the 2025 federal election, the much-anticipated Cheaper Home Batteries Program is on its way – a major win for households looking to take control of their energy bills. Backed by a $2.3 billion federal investment, the program is set to dramatically reduce the upfront cost of home batteries and accelerate Australia’s transition to renewable energy.

Here’s what we know so far

What is the Cheaper Home Batteries Program?

Labor’s plan aims to cut home battery installation costs by up to 30%, with eligible households receiving a rebate of $3,750 on a standard 10 kWh battery (or up a max of $4,000 off per household, up to a maximum of 50 kWh).

The program is expected to go live from 1 July 2025 and will be delivered via the existing Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES).

Who can access it?

The rebate will be available for:

Homeowners, small businesses, and community organisations

Batteries with 5–50 kWh of usable capacity (you can install systems up to 100 kWh but the rebate applies only to first 50 kWh)

Systems that are Virtual Power Plant (VPP) ready and installed with solar (existing or new)

Systems installed by Clean Energy Council-accredited installers

How will the rebate work?

The rebate will decrease each year from 2025 to 2030, when the program will finish

While the rebate officially launches on 1st July 2025, systems installed now may qualify if they aren’t activated until the program begins. Meaning you can’t turn your battery on until July 1.

Why this matters?

Batteries help households store solar energy to use when prices are high or the sun isn’t shining. That means more energy independence, better bill control, and a cleaner grid.

This battery rebate sets the stage for widespread battery adoption, opening up savings and flexibility to more Australians than ever before.

What can you do now?

No need to wait until July 1 to order your battery, we’re here to help you get battery-ready – and make the most of this upcoming rebate.
