Reyner & Faa – Living smarter with a home battery

When Melbourne couple Reyner and Faa moved into their first home, they wanted lower bills and a lighter footprint. With a solar and battery setup, they’ve slashed energy costs, gained comfort without compromise, and proven that smart, sustainable living doesn’t mean sacrifice.

Meet the couple

When Reyner and Faa moved into their first home in Melbourne in 2023, they weren’t just excited about the space for themselves and their three pets. They were determined to live smarter when it came to energy.

Like many young Australians, the couple wanted to save on bills while reducing their carbon footprint. But when their old provider hiked their rates, they started looking for a better way.

“(Our previous energy retailer) gave us a crazy price increase, and that’s when we thought – there has to be a better way. We jumped on Victorian Energy Compare and Flow came up as one of the best options. Add the solar and battery rebate, and it just made sense.” – Reyner

Why they chose a battery

The $7,500 Victorian rebate for batteries and solar gave them a boost, but the decision went deeper than dollars. With Faa working from home and Reyner keeping a close eye on costs, a home battery meant independence, comfort, and far less stress.

“The battery helps us feel less stressed about how much energy we’re actually using. If we want to turn the AC on in summer, we just do it. It’s powered by the sun anyway.” – Reyner

lifestyle shift

For Reyner and Faa, the battery hasn’t been about sacrifice – it’s been about living more comfortably.

  • Bills slashed: Their latest bill came in at just $54.
  • Convenience: They run the dishwasher and washing machine in the morning without even thinking about it.
  • Holiday bonus: During a three-week overseas trip, their system kept exporting solar during higher priced times, leaving them with credits when they returned.
“It doesn’t hinder our life at all. I just set the washing machine or dishwasher at night, and it runs in the morning when the sun’s up. I don’t even think about it. Our latest bill was around $54. In my old apartment, I was paying three times that. I couldn’t be happier.” – Faa

Comfort without guilt

The couple’s 10kWh Alpha battery (with built-in inverter) allows them to store solar during the day and use it when they need it most – typically when buying energy from the grid comes at a premium during the evening. Whether it’s boiling the kettle, microwaving leftovers, or cranking up the air conditioning on a hot Melbourne night, they enjoy it all powered by stored sunshine.

“For us, it was both financial and sustainability. We’ll see the return in three or four years, but in the meantime, it feels good to know we’re doing our part too.” – Reyner

Looking ahead

Their modular battery system means they can expand it down the track, but for now, Reyner and Faa are enjoying a lifestyle shift: lower bills, guilt-free comfort, and the satisfaction of knowing their home is powered smarter for the future.

“It’s just a relief knowing our choices are paying off now and will keep paying off in the future.” – Reyner
