The Clean Energy Council has released its bi-annual Rooftop Solar and Storage Report for January to June 2024, sharing key statistics and insights on the rooftop solar and behind-the-meter battery sector.

We’ve outlined some of the highlights from the report below and break down what it means for Flow Power customers.

Rooftop solar PV key contributor

Rooftop solar PV continues to be a key contributor to the nation’s energy mix, with a generation share of 11.3% for the first half of 2024.

The total installed capacity of rooftop PV for the first 6 months of 2024 was 1.3 GW – well above the 310 MW worth of commissioned large-scale generation projects over the same period.

The cumulative total is now sitting at 24.4 GW, as Australia rapidly approaches the significant milestone of 25 GW by the end of the year. To put that number into perspective – black and brown coal combined for a total of 21.3 GW of installed capacity in FY2023-2024.

NSW maintains title as leading solar state

New South Wales continues to lead the way for highest installed capacity of any state, at 454 MW.

New South Wales now boasts the highest level of total installed capacity of rooftop PV, with 6.6 GW – over 25% of the entire Australian capacity. It also became the second state to surpass 1,000,000 rooftop PV units installed across the state.

Queensland and Victoria came second and third, respectively, with annual installed capacities of 360 MW and 246 MW.

Boost in 2024 battery sales

The report highlights a significant uptick in home battery installations, with nearly 30,000 units sold nationwide in the first half of 2024.

Battery attachments to rooftop PV are steadily growing, with the cumulative total passing 140,000 in the second quarter of 2024. 20.7% of rooftop solar installations had an accompanying small-scale battery installed, which indicates the ongoing potential for further uptake.

Rise in solar, inverter and storage products available in Australia

There are now 7,250 approved rooftop solar, inverter, and storage products, marking a 12% increase compared to previous reports.

This growth reflects ongoing advancements in product innovation and regulatory frameworks, which supports consumer choice, efficiency and accessibility.

What does this mean for Flow Power customers?

This report is good news for Flow Power customers with wholesale linked contracts. We’re witnessing solar and storage reshape the nation’s energy landscape in real-time.

The abundance of low-cost solar energy supplied to the grid continues to deepen the duck curve during the daytime hours, leading to cheap, or often negative priced intervals. Simply shifting energy intensive operations to these hours can help your business reduce costs.

Additionally, with more solar, inverter and storage products available for Australian customers, there’s never been a better time to start thinking about behind-the-meter installations for your business. Prices continue a downward trajectory, making behind-the-meter solutions more accessible for the average Australian business or household.
