Community energy projects are putting the power, both literally and figuratively, back into the hands of local residents. These initiatives give people a real voice and tangible stake in Australia’s transition to renewable energy.
In a recent episode of the Solar Insiders Podcast, our Head of Community & Stakeholder Engagement, Kait Williamson, explains how Flow Power is doing more than just generating clean electricity – we’re helping communities connect to the energy they use.
Newstead Community Energy Project
One inspiring example is the town of Newstead in Victoria. As one of Australia’s early adopters of community energy, Newstead has become a model for what can be achieved when locals take the lead.
Driven by a passionate group of residents who formed the community energy group ‘Renewable Newstead’, they set an ambitious goal: generate their own clean energy locally, reduce their carbon footprint, and take back control of their electricity supply.
The Newstead Community Energy Project officially opened last year, with Flow Power as a key partner. Flow Power led the development, construction, grid connection, and continue to operate the site efficiently. But our role goes beyond that of an energy supplier – we’ve become a trusted collaborator, bringing flexibility, transparency, and a willingness to explore new, community-led approaches.
Shoalhaven Community Solar Farm
Further north in New South Wales, Shoalhaven is home to Flow Power’s first-ever community energy group project. This initiative features a dedicated community fund that returns financial benefits directly to local members.
The Shoalhaven Community Solar Farm is another strong example of how flexible, community-led models can be successfully implemented in different regions.
Why small-scale projects matter
Community energy projects, particularly in smaller or regional communities, are uniquely positioned to deliver a wide range of benefits:
- Grid resilience: Decentralised systems help stabilise the grid and make better use of existing infrastructure.
- Faster implementation: Smaller projects can often be deployed more quickly than grid-scale developments.
- Local impact: The benefits of lower energy costs, cleaner air, job opportunities—are felt directly by the community.
- Empowerment: Residents are able to have more control over their energy use, environmental impact and monthly bill.
Creating the renewable energy future, together
At Flow Power, our place-based approach recognises that no two communities are the same and there’s no one-size-fits-all energy solution. Every community has its own priorities, challenges, and aspirations and what works in one region may look completely different in another.
We’re actively seeking to support more progressive, community-driven energy projects across Australia. Whether it’s a town like Newstead or Shoalhaven, the goal remains the same: deliver real, local benefits and support Australia’s transition to a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
