On the 23rd of August,2019, the Flow Power team saw the first solar panels, also known as the ‘golden row’, installed at Bomen Solar Farm – a 100 MW solar farm built by Australian developer, Beon Energy Solutions and owned by Spark Renewables.
More than 310,000 panels were installed featuring:
- Bi-facial Jinko panels that absorb sunlight on both sides enabling maximum generation
- NextTracker technology which shifts each panel throughout the day to follow the sun and capture energy as it moves
- Technology to stop rows of panels from catching shade in the morning and afternoon to maximise solar exposure
In 2018, Flow Power added more than half of Bomen Solar Farm’s output (69 MW) to our offtake portfolio. Flow Power retails the offtake through Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) to our New South Wales customers, providing low-cost energy by creating a virtual link to solar generation for up to ten years.
The Sydney Opera House, Ascham school, Molycop, Snack Brands and three major NSW councils are just a few Flow Power customers that are benefitting from energy supply arrangements virtually linked to Bomen Solar Farm via a PPA.
More and more Australian businesses are reshaping their energy with renewable generation project linked electricity contracts. PPAs like ours, are helping businesses support the growing pipeline of renewable projects, including solar farms like Bomen.
But the benefits go beyond generating low-cost clean energy and supporting future project development. In May 2019, Bomen Solar Farm provided an important job boost for the Wagga Wagga region with around 250 local workers employed in the construction phase.
Since its successful completion in 2020, the project not only generates enough energy to power 36,000 homes annually, but it also has delivered a number of “agri-solar” initiatives through a $1 million Bomen Solar Farm Community Fund underpinned by a PPA with Westpac.
This partnership with Westpac delivered the largest community benefit fund in Australia for a solar project at the time of inception and created a long-lasting legacy of positive impact through a program that supports the community for at least 10 years after project completion.
